Choosing a school and submitting documents

Many people with children who have moved to the United States know the need to carefully choose the area where they live. It is especially important to understand which schools belong to the selected address.

What are the categories of American schools?

By age:

  • Elementary School - from 1st to 5th grade (from 5-6 to 10-11 years old);
  • Middle School – 6th to 8th grade (from 11 to 14-15 years old);
  • High School - from the 9th to the 12th grade (from 15 to 18 years old).

K-8 is a combined Elementary+Middle, often found in areas of new development and sparsely populated areas.

Charter school - charter schools. Publicly funded private schools.

Magnet school – specialized schools with additional subjects.

Sometimes it is possible to study in the same school for different ages K-12 (more often in different buildings). It is important to understand that in this case the school ratings will most often refer to High School.

For initial viewing, you can filter by school rating by turning off private, charter, and choosing a rating over 7. www.greatschools.org

Ukrainians with a humanitarian password are eligible for federal student aid for colleges and universities ( https://studentaid.gov/help/eligible-noncitizen ). You can apply directly through your college or university or through this link: https://studentaid.gov/fafsa-app/ROLES . If you do not have an SSN (Social Security Number), you must submit a paper application because you will not be able to create an FSA ID and/or sign your application. The current FAFSA form is available at https://studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2022-23-fafsa.pdf .

Preschool education in America is not mandatory. Parents can decide on their own whether to send their child to daycare depending on the family budget and circumstances.

There are different types of preschools, including nonprofit, church, private, and Montessori schools. Non-profit schools are the least expensive. Their parents work as assistant teachers or as teachers. Church schools are attached to religious centers. The learning process in them includes religious education. Private schools are the most expensive. A number of private kindergartens use the Montessori teaching method. This method is more a philosophy of life than a teaching method. It is based on the belief that each child is individual and has unique needs, interests and abilities. Montessori schools have two levels: for children aged 2.5 to 6 years and from 6 to 12 years.
